Which documents to gather to renew your work permit

The short answer: your previous EAD, front and back; the evidence for the case your renewal is based on; and the proof of identity that fits your situation. Everything else depends on your category and on the channel you file through. It is not “just three documents,” and it does not replace the official instructions.

What applies to both routes

  • A copy of your previous EAD, front and back. It shows the category, the A-Number and the expiration date.
  • Your current mailing address, the one you use to reliably receive mail from USCIS.
  • Proof of identity for your case: the instructions describe what works and in what order, and they accept alternatives when the primary document does not exist.
  • A copy of your Form I-94, passport or travel document, with the alternatives the instructions allow. Documented exception: for (c)(9), the instructions state that those copies are not required.
  • Passport-style photos when you file on paper; if you file online, the portal explains how to upload them and in what format.

Nothing on this list decides whether you qualify. USCIS decides, and authorized legal help interprets your situation.

If your route is (c)(8): pending asylum

  • Evidence that your asylum application (Form I-589) is still pending, as described in the (c)(8) section of the official instructions.
  • If the form asks about arrests or convictions and you answer yes, the instructions ask for specific court documentation. It is worth reviewing that point with authorized legal help.
  • The 150-day plus 30-day wait you may have heard about applies to the first work permit application. It is not a requirement for your renewal.

If your route is (c)(9): pending adjustment of status

  • Evidence that your Form I-485 is still pending: the receipt notice or other proof, if you file separately from the I-485.
  • If the I-485 was filed with an immigration court, the instructions ask you to show that the proceeding is ongoing and that the application is still pending there.
  • The instructions warn that asylees or refugees adjusting status file under (a)(5) or (a)(3), categories that are outside our (c)(9) preparation.

What changes depending on the channel

On paper, the photos are printed and everything travels in the same envelope to the official address that applies. Online, the USCIS portal explains what to upload and in what format, and whether that channel is available depends on your category and circumstances. Before you send anything, confirm the channel, the address and the current fee in the official sources.

SettleWise does not file anything for you, through any channel.

Example

Example with made-up details: a person with a C09 EAD that expires on June 1, 2027, gathers a copy of their card, front and back, the receipt notice for their I-485 and their proof of identity. They do not add a copy of the I-94 because their route has that documented exception. This example illustrates the order of work; it is not a real case or a recommendation for yours.
